Aviation runs in the family – Matthew’s great grandfather was a test pilot and trainer in World War II and his grandfather continued in his footsteps as a pilot. As a result, Matthew was introduced to aviation at a very young age. His first solo flight at age 16 launched him into a career of flying and maintaining aircraft. After graduating from National Aviation Academy in Clearwater, his passion continued into a career of contract work maintaining government owned aircraft all over the world. As a native Floridian, Matthew’s heart for his homeland nudged him to start his own business and put his experience as an A&P and IA to use locally in the Tampa Bay Area. This was the birth of High Altitude Aviation.
John O’Donnell’s journey into mechanics began at the age of 7, working on automotive and small engines. By 10, he had built a go-cart from a riding lawnmower, and at 12, successfully rebuilt an air-cooled VW engine. At 20, John became an automotive mechanic and earned ASE certifications in all categories except automatic transmissions. For seven years, he served as the crew chief for a drag racing team, maintaining a car that ran eight-second quarter miles. He later owned and operated a brick-and-mortar auto repair shop in Largo for six years, followed by four years running a mobile auto repair business. In 2011, John discovered skydiving, sparking a new interest in aviation. He began working on aircraft alongside an A&P mechanic and graduated from National Aviation Academy in 2014 with his A&P certificate, where he met Matt Reichart. In 2015, he earned additional certifications in avionics, including NCATT AET and FCC elements 1, 3, and 8. John spent two years working on turboprop skydiving aircraft and then deployed overseas as a contractor, maintaining military aircraft for eight years. In June 2024, he joined High Altitude Aviation, continuing his dedication to mechanical excellence in the aviation field.
